What is a Skin Booster treatment?

Our skin booster treatments are performed by Dr Duncan Brennand within our L’Atelier Aesthetics clinic at 101 Harley Street. Skin booster relatively quick treatments which are great at improving hydration, texture but they must still be performed by a qualified medical expert. At L’Atelier we use a range of skin boosters, including the popular Profhilo treatment.

Dr Duncan Explains All

Are Skin Boosters the same as HA fillers? Dr Duncan Brennand explains all

Most injectable skin boosters utilise hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule in the skin responsible for maintaining moisture and structure. This is the same hyaluronic acid that is found in dermal fillers, however unlike HA fillers, skin boosters are often not cross-linked, meaning they are better spreading under the skin to give an all round hydrating effect. If you are looking for more of a contouring or shaping treatment, for example to enhance the lips, or chin then you need to consider a typical HA filler treatment where small amounts of filler are placed in a specific area.

What are the benefits of skin boosters?

Skin boosters work to:

  • Improve hydration and luminosity

  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles

  • Increase elasticity and firmness

  • Smooth uneven or crepey skin texture

  • Reduce dullness caused by ageing or environmental stress

  • Revive skin health for a more radiant, youthful glow

They’re suitable for all skin types and can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, and hands, anywhere the skin needs a bit of extra help and vitality.

How Do Skin Boosters Work?

Skin boosters are administered through a series of micro-injections using ultra-fine needles. The hyaluronic acid spreads evenly beneath the skin, attracting water molecules and improving elasticity and texture.

The treatment works in two phases:

  1. Immediate hydration boost, plumper, smoother skin within days.

  2. Long-term regeneration, increased collagen and elastin production for lasting improvement over the following weeks.

What is the difference between Skin Boosters and Polynucleotides?

While both Skin Boosters and Polynucleotides work to rejuvenate the skin from within, they work in different ways. Skin Boosters use hyaluronic acid or other active ingredients to deliver intense hydration and improve skin texture, elasticity, and glow. They act like an internal moisturiser, restoring radiance and softness.

Polynucleotides, on the other hand, are regenerative injectables made from purified DNA fragments (Salmon Sperm is the term you may have heard) that actively repair and rebuild the skin at a cellular level.

They stimulate fibroblast activity, improve tissue quality, and promote long-term healing and collagen production. In short, Skin Boosters hydrate, while Polynucleotides regenerate and many patients benefit from a personalised plan that combines both for optimal skin quality.

Ask us a question
What is a skin booster?

A skin booster is a lightweight hyaluronic acid injectable designed to deeply hydrate and rejuvenate the skin without adding volume.

How do skin boosters work?

They deliver hyaluronic acid into the skin using micro-injections, improving moisture levels, elasticity, and texture from within.

What are Polynucleotides or 'Salmon Sperm / DNA'?

Polynucleotides are a new generation of regenerative skin boosters that go beyond hydration to repair and rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid skin boosters, which primarily focus on moisture and glow, Polynucleotides work to detoxify and restore the skin’s natural balance. Derived from purified DNA fragments, they stimulate fibroblast activity to boost collagen and elastin production while neutralising free radicals, which are the unstable molecules that accelerate ageing.

This double action helps to regenerate the skin, improve elasticity, and enhance overall skin quality, leaving the complexion clearer, firmer, and more rejuvenated.

What do skin boosters do for the skin?

They enhance hydration, boost collagen production, and leave the skin glowing, smooth, and refreshed.

How long do skin boosters take to work?

Most people notice visible results immediately with improvements  within 1–2 weeks, with continued skin quality improvement as the skin becomes more hydrated.

How long do skin boosters, like Profhilo last?

Results usually last between 6–9 months, depending on the individual, the product and treatment area.

How many sessions do I need on Harley Street?

At our 101 Harley Street location you will need a course of two treatments, three to four weeks apart, is recommended initially, followed by maintenance every six months.

What’s the difference between skin boosters and HA fillers?

Hyaluronic acid fillers restore shape and volume, sculpting features like the lips or cheeks for definition. Skin Boosters, may still use HA, but they use ultra-light formulations (non-cross linked) to hydrate and improve skin quality rather than add volume, enhancing radiance, texture, and elasticity for a naturally refreshed look.

Can skin boosters be used under the eyes and are they safe?

Yes, certain skin boosters or Polynucleotides can be used to hydrate and smooth the delicate under-eye area safely. All treatments at L’Atelier are performed by medical professionals like Dr Duncan Brennand using FDA or CE-approved, clinically tested injectables.

Skin Booster Aftercare and Recovery at L’Atelier Aesthetics

Following a skin booster treatment at L’Atelier Aesthetics in Harley Street, most patients can return to their normal activities immediately with minimal downtime. Some redness, mild swelling or small bumps at the injection sites are entirely normal and typically settle within 12 to 24 hours. Results begin immediately, with further improvements in hydration, texture and radiance continuing over the following one to two weeks as the hyaluronic acid integrates into the skin. Results typically last between six and nine months.

Skin Booster Aftercare Summary

Skin boosters are advanced injectable treatments that deliver deep hydration through a series of micro-injections. By dispersing hyaluronic acid evenly beneath the skin, they restore moisture, improve elasticity and promote a naturally refreshed, luminous complexion. At L’Atelier Aesthetics, all skin booster treatments are performed by Dr Duncan Brennand at our 101 Harley Street clinic.

Skin Booster Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your skin booster treatment in London:

  • Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up or skincare products
  • Eat before your appointment to ensure comfort
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your visit, as well-hydrated skin tends to respond particularly well to treatment
  • Inform your practitioner of any active skin conditions, cold sores or recent procedures in the treatment area
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen where possible, unless prescribed by your doctor
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment to minimise the risk of bruising

During your visit:

  • Clinical photographs and consent will be completed if not already done
  • A member of the team will cleanse the skin thoroughly
  • Optional topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort prior to treatment
  • Treatment time is typically 30 minutes

What to Expect Immediately After Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are a well-tolerated treatment with minimal downtime for most patients.

You may experience:

  • Redness at and around the injection sites
  • Small bumps or raised areas where the product has been placed
  • Mild swelling or tenderness to touch
  • Occasional light bruising

These effects are entirely normal and are a sign that the treatment has been administered correctly. Redness and swelling typically resolve within 12 to 24 hours. Any bruising, if present, usually fades within a few days.

Skin Booster Post-Treatment Care

To support your skin’s recovery and help achieve the best possible results, we recommend the following after your treatment:

  • Keep the skin clean and avoid touching or massaging the treated area for the first 24 hours
  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep the skin comfortable and hydrated
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above daily, even on overcast days
  • Avoid make-up for at least 12 hours following treatment
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for at least 48 hours after treatment

If you experience significant swelling, any signs of infection or unusual discomfort beyond the first 48 hours, please contact our Harley Street clinic promptly.

When Will I See Results from Skin Boosters?

One of the benefits of skin booster treatments is that improvements can be noticed quickly.

  • An immediate hydration boost is visible within the first few days, with skin appearing plumper and smoother
  • Further improvements in tone, texture and radiance develop over one to two weeks as the hyaluronic acid continues to work beneath the surface
  • Long-term benefits, including increased collagen and elastin production, continue to build over the following weeks
  • Results typically last between six and nine months

For optimal correction, a course of treatments is often recommended. Your practitioner will advise on the most suitable plan based on your skin concerns and goals.

Who Should Not Have Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters may not be suitable if you have:

  • Active skin infections, cold sores or open wounds in the treatment area
  • A known allergy to hyaluronic acid or any components of the product being used
  • Certain autoimmune conditions or skin disorders affecting the treatment area
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

A full medical consultation will be carried out prior to treatment to confirm suitability and ensure the most appropriate skin booster is selected for your individual needs.

When to Contact Us

Skin booster treatments are considered very safe injectable procedures when performed by qualified medical professionals. However, please contact L’Atelier Aesthetics immediately if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening swelling beyond 48 hours
  • Signs of infection such as increasing redness, heat or discharge
  • Unusual pain or changes in the skin
  • Any visual disturbance following treatment in the under-eye or periorbital area

Our Harley Street team is always here to support you following your treatment and to answer any questions during your recovery.
