Ask us a question
What does the treatment involve?

At our Marylebone skin clinic, radiofrequency energy is used to provide an even and uniform heat. This contracts collagen in the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal. Once a leg vein is closed, blood flow is redirected to healthy veins.

How long does the treatment take?

It takes around 45 minutes for each leg. If both legs are affected, they would usually be treated separately.

How do I care for my legs after treatment?

You’ll need to wear compression stockings for 2 weeks after the treatment. You’ll be given a hotline number to use if you have any questions or concerns, as well as a follow-up appointment.

When will I be back on my feet?

As the procedure is so much less invasive than other treatments, there is less pain and bruising. Most people can get on with normal life after just 48 hours.

Is it safe?

Radio-frequency ablation treatment has proven to be a very safe alternative to surgery. We will talk through your suitability and any risks during your consultation.

*Individual results may vary.

How many Microneedling treatments should I have and how does it cost?

Our Marylebone professionals recommend 3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart. But we’ll talk through this in more detail and develop a micro-needling programme for you during your consultation. Our microneedling prices start from £350.

*Individual results may vary.

Varicose Vein Treatment Aftercare and Recovery at L’Atelier Aesthetics

Following varicose vein treatment at L’Atelier Aesthetics in Harley Street, some bruising, swelling and tenderness in the treated area is entirely normal and may be present for up to two weeks. Most patients are able to return to light daily activities shortly after their appointment, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and prolonged periods of standing or sitting in the initial recovery period. Results develop gradually as the treated veins are reabsorbed by the body, with full outcomes typically visible at two to three months.

Varicose Vein Treatment Aftercare Summary

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, varicose vein treatments are led by Dr Duncan Brennand, who brings a highly medical, evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of venous disease. Depending on your individual anatomy and the nature of your veins, treatment may involve radiofrequency ablation or microsclerotherapy, both of which are minimally invasive and deliver results comparable to surgical intervention with significantly less downtime.

Varicose Vein Treatment Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your varicose vein treatment in London:

  • Wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area
  • Stay well hydrated before your appointment
  • Avoid applying lotions, creams or oils to the legs on the day of treatment
  • Inform your practitioner of all current medications, particularly blood thinners, and any relevant medical history
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment

During your visit:

  • Clinical photographs and consent will be completed if not already done
  • A member of the team will assess the treatment area
  • Numbing cream and optional local anaesthetic injections will be used to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure
  • Treatment time is typically 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area and technique used

What to Expect Immediately After Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose vein treatment is a minimally invasive procedure and most patients tolerate it well.

You may experience:

  • Bruising and swelling around the treated area
  • Tenderness or a sensation of tightness along the treated vein
  • Temporary skin discolouration over the vein
  • A mild aching or heaviness in the legs

These effects are a normal part of the healing process and typically resolve over one to two weeks. The treated veins will gradually fade and be reabsorbed by the body over the weeks and months following treatment.

Varicose Vein Treatment Post-Treatment Care

To support your recovery and help achieve the best possible results, we recommend the following after your treatment:

  • Walk gently for at least 30 minutes immediately after your appointment to encourage healthy circulation
  • Wear any compression garments or stockings as advised by your practitioner
  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid submerging it in baths, swimming pools or hot tubs for at least one week
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and high impact activities for two weeks following treatment
  • Avoid prolonged standing or sitting in the same position during the initial recovery period
  • Avoid direct sun exposure or heat, including saunas and sunbeds, on the treated area for at least two weeks
  • Elevate the legs when resting where possible to help reduce swelling

If you notice significant worsening of swelling, unusual warmth or any other unexpected changes, please contact our Harley Street clinic promptly.

When Will I See Results from Varicose Vein Treatment?

Varicose vein treatment works by causing the affected veins to close and be gradually reabsorbed by the body over time.

  • The treated veins will begin to fade in the weeks following your appointment
  • Visible improvements continue to develop progressively
  • Full results are typically expected at two to three months post-treatment
  • Some patients may require more than one session depending on the extent of the veins being treated

Your practitioner will review your results and advise on whether any further treatment is needed to achieve your desired outcome.

Who Should Not Have Varicose Vein Treatment?

Varicose vein treatment may not be suitable if you have:

  • A history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or clotting disorders
  • Active infections or broken skin in the treatment area
  • Certain cardiovascular conditions
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • A known allergy to sclerosant agents used in microsclerotherapy

A full medical consultation will be carried out prior to treatment to confirm suitability and design a treatment plan tailored to your anatomy and individual needs.

When to Contact Us

Varicose vein treatment is considered safe and effective when performed by experienced medical professionals. However, please contact L’Atelier Aesthetics immediately if you experience:

  • Sudden or significant increase in swelling, pain or warmth in the leg
  • Skin that becomes hot, red or feels firm to the touch
  • Any signs of an allergic reaction
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain, which requires immediate emergency medical attention

Our Harley Street team is always here to support you following your treatment and to answer any questions during your recovery.
