SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, delivering a medical-grade collagen induction treatment that creates controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-channels stimulate the body’s natural repair response, increasing collagen and elastin production over time to improve texture, reduce scarring, refine pores and restore overall skin quality. At L’Atelier Aesthetics, every SkinPen treatment is consultation-led, personalised and focused on natural, healthy results.
SkinPen Microneedling Pre-Treatment Guidance
To prepare for your SkinPen microneedling treatment in London:
- Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up or skincare products
- Eat before your appointment to ensure comfort during treatment
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids and active skincare for at least five days before treatment
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunbeds for at least one week prior
- Avoid waxing, threading or any form of physical exfoliation to the treatment area in the week before your appointment
- Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen where possible, unless prescribed by your doctor
- Inform your practitioner of any active skin conditions, cold sores or recent procedures in the treatment area
During your visit:
- A consultation and skin assessment will be carried out before treatment begins
- A member of the team will cleanse the skin thoroughly
- Topical numbing cream will be applied and left on for a period before treatment begins to ensure comfort
- A controlled SkinPen microneedling treatment will be performed, followed by a soothing post-treatment serum
- Treatment time is typically 45 to 60 minutes
What to Expect Immediately After SkinPen Microneedling
SkinPen is a well-tolerated treatment. Most patients describe the sensation during treatment as a mild vibration or light scratching, which is well managed with the numbing cream applied beforehand.
You may experience:
- Redness across the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn
- Mild swelling or a sensation of warmth and tightness
- Sensitivity to touch and skincare products for the first 24 to 48 hours
- Tiny pinpoint marks across the skin where the micro-channels were created
These effects are a normal and expected part of the treatment. Redness typically settles within 48 hours, and the skin will begin to feel smoother and more hydrated as the healing process progresses.
SkinPen Microneedling Post-Treatment Care
To support the skin’s recovery and optimise your results, we recommend the following after your treatment:
- Keep the skin clean and wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser
- Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep the skin comfortable and hydrated throughout the healing period
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above daily, as the skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure following treatment
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHAs and BHAs), vitamin C and other active skincare for at least five days post-treatment, or until the skin has fully settled
- Avoid make-up for at least 12 to 24 hours following treatment
- Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area unnecessarily in the first 24 hours
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for 24 to 48 hours
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunbeds for at least two weeks following treatment
- Do not use at-home dermarollers or any form of physical exfoliation until fully healed
When Will I See Results from SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen works by triggering the skin’s natural repair and regeneration process, which means results develop gradually over time.
- Initial improvements in skin texture and a refreshed, hydrated appearance begin to emerge within one to two weeks
- More significant improvements in tone, texture, pore size and scar appearance continue to develop over the following weeks as new collagen forms
- Results build progressively with each session in a course of treatment
- A course of three to four treatments is recommended for optimal correction, with results lasting up to six months
Where appropriate, microneedling can be complemented with exosome therapy to further support skin regeneration and recovery. Your practitioner will discuss this option during your consultation if it is relevant to your goals.
Who Should Not Have SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen microneedling may not be suitable if you have:
- Active skin infections, open wounds, cold sores or compromised skin in the treatment area
- Active acne or inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area
- A history of keloid scarring
- Certain blood disorders or are taking blood-thinning medications that cannot be paused
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
A thorough consultation and skin assessment will be carried out before treatment to confirm suitability and ensure the needle depth and approach is appropriate for your skin type and concerns.
