Treat Iron Deficiency & Anaemia on Harley Street at L’Atelier Aethetics

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide and a leading cause of ongoing fatigue, reduced concentration and poor physical performance. Even mild iron deficiency can significantly impact energy levels, immune function and overall wellbeing, often long before anaemia is diagnosed.

The Iron Clinic at L’Atelier Aesthetics, 101 Harley Street, Marylebone provides medically appropriate assessment and iron infusion treatment for patients with confirmed or suspected iron deficiency, offering a fast and effective way to restore iron levels when oral supplementation is insufficient or poorly tolerated

What is iron deficiency?

Iron is an essential mineral required to produce haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Adequate iron levels are vital for energy production, brain function, muscle performance and immune health.

Iron deficiency develops when iron intake, absorption or storage does not meet the body’s demands. This can occur gradually and is often missed, with symptoms attributed to stress, lifestyle or ageing rather than an underlying deficiency.

If left untreated, iron deficiency may progress to iron deficiency anaemia, where haemoglobin levels fall below normal ranges.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency

Iron deficiency can present in a wide range of ways, depending on severity and duration. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • Shortness of breath during activity
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Pale skin
  • Dry mouth or brittle nails
  • Frequent infections
  • Reduced exercise tolerance

Symptoms may be present even when haemoglobin levels are within normal limits, particularly in early or functional iron deficiency.

Benefits of Iron Infusion Therapy

Iron infusion therapy offers a range of clinically demonstrated benefits, particularly for patients who have not responded to oral supplementation or who require rapid correction of iron levels:

  • Rapid restoration of iron stores – noticeable improvement in energy and stamina typically within days
  • No gastrointestinal side effects – bypasses the digestive system entirely
  • Improved exercise tolerance and physical performance
  • Reduction in fatigue associated with iron deficiency anaemia
  • Supports hair regrowth in cases of iron-related hair loss
  • Beneficial for women’s health including those with heavy periods, post-partum iron loss, or pre-surgical optimisation
  • Supports management of iron deficiency associated with chronic conditions including heart disease and cancer therapy

Individual results may vary. A medical consultation is required to confirm suitability.

How iron infusion treatment works

Iron infusion therapy delivers iron directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous infusion. This allows iron to be rapidly available for red blood cell production and replenishment of iron stores. Unlike oral iron supplements, intravenous iron bypasses the digestive system, making it particularly effective for patients who experience gastrointestinal side effects, have absorption issues, or require faster correction of iron levels. Treatment is tailored to the individual based on clinical assessment and blood test results.

Who is a Good Candidate for Iron Infusion?

Iron infusion therapy may be suitable for you if you:

  • Have confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia on a blood test
  • Have been unable to tolerate oral iron supplements due to nausea, constipation or stomach pain
  • Have a condition affecting iron absorption (such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or post-bariatric surgery)
  • Require rapid correction of iron levels ahead of surgery or childbirth
  • Have ongoing symptoms despite completing a course of oral iron
  • Are a woman experiencing heavy periods, post-partum recovery or perimenopause-related fatigue

A medical consultation is required before treatment is offered. Iron infusion is only administered when clinically appropriate.

Your consultation and assessment

All patients attending the L’Atelier Iron Clinic undergo a medical consultation prior to treatment. This includes a review of symptoms, medical history, contributing factors and recent blood tests where available.

If required, further blood tests may be recommended to confirm iron deficiency and determine the most appropriate treatment approach. Iron infusion is only offered when clinically indicated and safe.

Ask us a question
How is iron deficiency diagnosed?

The Iron Clinic will take a small sample of your blood to determine whether your iron levels are low. They will then advise if an iron infusion would be beneficial and if so, the iron dosage to be infused.

It’s extremely important to treat any underlying causes of iron deficiency and/or anaemia. This will be discussed by your doctor.

What to expect during your iron infusion

Iron infusion treatment is carried out in a clinical setting and typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. You will be seated comfortably while the infusion is administered under medical supervision.

Most patients tolerate treatment well and are able to return to normal daily activities immediately afterwards. There is no downtime.

How long will the results last?

If you maintain a healthy diet which includes iron after the iron infusion treatment, symptoms should be improved for the longer term. Most people no longer need to take iron tablets.*

What is in the infusion?

The infusions are a blend of water, vitamins and minerals. The mix of vitamins and minerals is tailored to the individual and their needs. All of the ingredients are nutrients that are essential to life – but the body cannot produce them by itself.

Are there any side effects?

The iron infusion is considered to be a safe procedure. Side effects are minor and affect around 3 to 4 people in every 100. They include a metallic taste in the mouth, mild flushing or feeling queasy.

What does an iron infusion treat?

Iron infusion treats iron deficiency and anaemia effectively and safely. Doing so generates a host of health benefits. For example, women’s health can be boosted with proven benefits including more vitality, better quality of life, improved exercise performance and better hair growth.

Intravenous iron is also beneficial in supporting the treatment of many illnesses associated with iron deficiency and anaemia including heart disease. It can also aid cancer therapy and patients undergoing operations.

How long does the iron infusion treatment take?

This walk-in walk-out procedure takes from 15 to 30 minutes.

*Individual results may vary.

Is iron infusion better than tablets?

Iron infusion is often more effective than oral iron for patients who cannot tolerate supplements, have absorption issues or require faster correction.

Iron Infusion Aftercare and Recovery at L’Atelier Aesthetics

Following an iron infusion at The Iron Clinic at L’Atelier Aesthetics in Harley Street, most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately with no downtime. Some mild side effects such as a metallic taste in the mouth, mild flushing or a brief feeling of queasiness can occur, but these are minor and typically settle quickly. Results develop over the days and weeks following treatment, with most patients noticing improvements in energy levels, concentration and breathlessness during exercise within the first few days.

The Iron Clinic is founded by Professor Toby Richards, a world-leading expert in iron therapy, and was one of the first private clinics to offer iron infusions on an outpatient basis. Iron infusion delivers iron directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous drip, bypassing the digestive system entirely. This makes it significantly faster and better tolerated than oral iron supplementation for patients who experience gastrointestinal side effects, have absorption difficulties or require rapid correction of their iron levels. Treatment is tailored to the individual based on clinical assessment and blood test results.

Iron Infusion Aftercare Summary

Iron Infusion Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your iron infusion appointment at The Iron Clinic, Harley Street:

  • Eat a light meal or snack before your appointment. Arriving on an empty stomach can increase the likelihood of feeling lightheaded or queasy during or after the infusion.
  • Stay well hydrated in the hours leading up to your visit. Good hydration makes cannulation easier and helps you feel more comfortable throughout.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up to allow access to the arm for cannulation.
  • Bring any recent blood test results with you if you have them, as these will help inform the clinical assessment and determine the appropriate iron dose.
  • Inform your practitioner of all current medications, supplements and any known allergies, particularly any previous reactions to iron preparations.
  • Let the team know of any relevant medical history so that suitability can be confirmed before treatment begins.

During your visit:

  • A small blood sample will be taken to assess your iron levels and confirm the appropriate treatment approach.
  • A medical consultation will take place to review your symptoms, history and any contributing factors to your deficiency.
  • Iron infusion is only offered when clinically indicated and appropriate for your individual needs.
  • A cannula will be placed in the arm and the iron preparation administered via an intravenous drip under medical supervision.
  • Treatment is carried out in a clinical setting and typically takes between 15 and 60 minutes depending on the preparation and dose prescribed.

What to Expect Immediately After an Iron Infusion

Iron infusions are well tolerated by the vast majority of patients. Side effects are minor and affect around 3 to 4 people in every 100. You may experience:

  • A temporary metallic taste in the mouth during or shortly after the infusion
  • Mild flushing or a feeling of warmth
  • Brief queasiness, which typically passes quickly
  • Mild soreness or bruising at the cannula site
  • A slight feeling of tiredness for the remainder of the day, though most patients feel well enough to carry on as normal

These effects are a normal and expected response to intravenous iron and resolve on their own. You will be monitored by the clinical team throughout the procedure and for a short period afterwards before you leave.

Iron Infusion Post-Treatment Care

On the day of your infusion

  • You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after treatment. There is no downtime.
  • Eat a balanced meal and drink plenty of fluids after your appointment to support recovery.
  • Rest if you feel tired. Some patients prefer to take things easy for the remainder of the day, which is entirely reasonable.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day as a precaution, even if you feel well.

For the first 24 to 48 hours

  • Keep the cannula site clean. A small dressing may be applied, which can be removed after a few hours once the site has settled.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-infusion to support recovery and reduce the risk of dehydration.
  • Continue to stay well hydrated, as iron is best utilised when the body has adequate fluid levels.

General aftercare and diet

  • Maintaining a healthy diet that includes iron-rich foods after your infusion will support longer-term improvement. Most patients find they no longer need to take iron tablets following treatment.
  • Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits, peppers and leafy greens can support iron utilisation in the weeks following treatment.
  • Avoid taking antacids or high-dose calcium supplements at the same time as iron-rich meals in the weeks after treatment, as these can interfere with iron absorption.
  • Any underlying causes of iron deficiency such as dietary factors, heavy periods or absorption conditions will have been discussed during your consultation. Addressing these is important to support lasting results.

When Will I Feel the Benefits of an Iron Infusion?

One of the key advantages of intravenous iron over oral supplementation is the speed at which results can be felt. The new total dose preparations used at The Iron Clinic correct iron stores rapidly, delivering iron directly to the muscles and bone marrow where it is needed most.

  • Most patients notice an improvement within the first few days, feeling less tired, more energetic and better able to concentrate
  • Breathlessness during exercise typically improves within the first one to two weeks
  • A fuller restoration of iron stores and improvement in blood markers generally occurs over four to eight weeks
  • Women may notice benefits including improved vitality, quality of life, exercise performance and better hair growth

Individual results may vary depending on the severity of deficiency, the underlying cause and overall health. Follow-up blood tests may be recommended to confirm that iron levels have been adequately restored.

Who Should Not Have an Iron Infusion?

Iron infusion may not be suitable for everyone. Treatment is only offered when clinically indicated following a medical consultation and blood test assessment. It may not be appropriate if you have:

  • Iron overload or conditions affecting iron metabolism such as haemochromatosis
  • A known allergy or previous serious reaction to intravenous iron preparations
  • Active bacterial infection
  • Certain blood disorders or conditions where intravenous iron is contraindicated

Iron infusion treatment may be suitable for individuals who have confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia, do not tolerate oral iron supplements, have poor absorption of oral iron, require rapid correction of iron levels, or experience ongoing symptoms despite supplementation. A medical consultation is required to confirm suitability in all cases.
