Is dissolving lip fillers safe?

Is dissolving lip fillers safe?

Lip fillers were the top treatment for many women and men in 2018. They continued to be an incredibly popular treatment, and many people opted to enhance their pout or add subtle fullness. One of the benefits of dermal fillers is that they’re quite a ‘flexible’ treatment. What we mean by this is that your results can be built up over time to achieve your desired appearance, but they can also be dissolved should you decide you wouldn’t like them anymore. So, are dissolving lip fillers safe, and how does it work?

How are lip fillers dissolved?

Your body naturally dissolves the dermal filler for you over time using a substance called hyaluronidase. This is a naturally occurring material in your body that gradually breaks down the hyaluronic acid in your filler, causing your results to gradually diminish over a period of 6 – 18 months. However, you can also dissolve them with a second injectable treatment that uses this same protein, hyaluronidase. So, how long does it take for lip filler to dissolve? This dissolving lip filler treatment speeds up your body’s natural dissolving of the filler so that your results could be greatly diminished after 3-4 days, or even in some cases just one day. Because this treatment is very similar to dermal fillers, a similar treatment procedure is carried out: full assessment, comprehension, and permission from the client before we apply numbing cream and begin targeted injections.

Why would I consider dissolving my lip filler?

Apart from simply ‘undoing’ and dissolving fillers, there actually is another reason you might consider this treatment. For those who have been receiving fillers for a few years and have received multiple treatments, it’s common to want to ‘start from scratch’ after some time. Dissolving lip fillers in London to gradually build them back up to different results is very common, especially in those who enjoyed the glamorous fullness of their treated lips but now would prefer a more naturally refreshed and full lip. Because our own preferences change quite a bit, so can our treatment approach. Dissolving your lip fillers and then gradually building them up again from this blank canvas allows us to take an entirely new approach, if you wish it, and begin a journey to different results than previously obtained. Olivia Atwood from Love Island, for example, has openly talked about having her lip fillers dissolved so that she may start her treatment journey from a blank canvas to achieve more natural results.

What problems can be treated with lip filler dissolving treatment?

At L’Atelier Aesthetics, located in the heart of London on Harley Street, we specialise in dissolving lip fillers. Poorly trained practitioners often produce subpar results when injecting lip fillers, leading to potential health issues and undesirable aesthetic outcomes. Improperly injected fillers can cause problems such as blocked veins or arteries, leading to infection, swelling, or even necrosis. There is also a risk of blindness if the filler blocks the area surrounding the eyes.

When fillers are injected too close to the skin’s surface, lumps and bumps may form, causing the lips to appear misshapen and uneven. Additionally, improperly administered fillers can migrate to other areas of the face, resulting in unwanted swelling above the lips. Overfilling is another common issue with lip fillers, which can cause sore and sensitive lips, pain, bruising, and discolouration.

With the rise of ‘back-street’ clinics, we have seen an increasing number of patients seeking to dissolve their lip fillers. We provide a safe environment to restore your natural lip shape. Even if your current lip fillers are not problematic, you can still visit us for treatment to revert to your natural lip appearance.

Is dissolving lip fillers safe?

Because this treatment uses a natural bodily compound, this treatment is very safe for use with your full comprehension and permission. There is a small risk with dissolving lip fillers, however, you are allergic to hyaluronidase. This may see your lips returning to smaller than they were pre-treatment because the substance can continue to break down the natural hyaluronic acid present in the area. This may mean you’d prefer to wait for your filler to dissolve naturally or accept this risk and simply have a little more put in post-dissolving to combat any unexpected changes.

Are there side effects of lip filler dissolving treatment?

Lip filler dissolving treatment is generally safe, but some side effects can occur. It’s common to experience some swelling in the treated area, which may last for a few days post-treatment. Bruising is also likely due to the injections. These side effects are normal and usually not a cause for concern. However, if symptoms persist beyond three or four days, you can contact us.

There is a rare chance of developing an allergic reaction, which can cause severe side effects. To prevent this, we perform a patch test before your treatment to ensure it’s safe for you. If you experience any allergy symptoms such as pain, itching, or shortness of breath after your treatment, seek medical attention immediately. Prompt action is crucial if you have an allergic reaction, although it is uncommon.

Once the recovery phase is complete, your lips will return to their natural size and shape. If you plan to have filler treatment again, we recommend waiting at least two weeks before scheduling an appointment. This waiting period allows your lips to heal properly and ensures that the hyaluronidase has fully dispersed and broken down. This way, any new filler injected will not be dissolved by remaining hyaluronidase.

What is the aftercare for lip filler dissolving treatment?

After your lip filler dissolving treatment, you may experience some redness and swelling in the treated area for the next 24 to 48 hours. To accommodate this, consider scheduling your appointment in the evening or on a day when you have no other plans. During your visit, we will provide personalised post-appointment care instructions. Following your treatment, we recommend the following guidelines:

  • No facial scrubs: Avoid facial scrubs or rubbing the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Stay out of the sun: Avoid sunbathing and direct sunlight for 24 hours.
  • No swimming: Do not swim for 24 hours after your appointment.
  • Avoid makeup: Refrain from using makeup for 12 hours post-treatment.
  • Limit alcohol: Refrain from excessive alcohol consumption for a day after treatment.
  • Skip strenuous exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Be cautious with skincare: Avoid skincare products with active ingredients for 3 days. This includes Vitamin C and retinols.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results from your lip filler dissolving treatment.
